hmmmm...this is getting boring already...
So I will share a few things in the hope that it will help while away my time (otherwise, this is another of my rather boring evenings which will be spent playing solitaire for 7 hours at a stretch).
People who know me use words ranging from crazy, insane, psychotic to funny when they describe me. I assure you readers, that none of the above stand true apart from my really bad days (on an average they range from 350-360 days a year).
Once upon a time an avid reader of only Tintin, Archies, Mills & Boons, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Madame Agatha Christie; I eventually graduated to reading books on espionage, Greek mythology, crime, non-fiction (few and far between though). Now I read any book which has a colorful layout and has the word mystery printed on it....obviously my options are abundant since most writers seem to make shit loads of money writing about how people should be killed, how people are killed, or who all should be killed.
My latest favorite is the 'Percy Jackson & the Olympians' series written by Rick Riordan. Not very fond of thick books, I avoided the Harry Potter books like the plague when they came out. My friends would read them till wee hours of the morning while I would sit and read about Eli Cohen. These friends of mine would rattle names from the Potter series while I would shamelessly look ignorant...Ha ha!!
Then 2 yrs ago I was asked to read Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief...and I thought " crap, here goes another 5 months of my life listening to people talk about wizards and spells and stupid 15 yr olds with super powers". Nevertheless, I sat on my friend's bed and opened the first page of Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief. Three days later I owned the 1st and 2nd book of the series and was eagerly checking online when the 3rd book was to be released. Such was the spell the Demi-God had cast on me...
For all of you, who are unfamiliar with Percy...here goes...Percy is a 12 yr old boy who figures out one day that he is the son of Poseidon, thus half boy-half god and he possesses super powers. No if you think his super powers are like Harry Potters' then you are mistaken.
Percy (Perseus Jackson) being the son of the God of Sea, can talk to all water creatures, stay underwater for hours/days at stretch, has a half brother who is a Cyclops, a pet pegasi, can start a Tsunami if he gets real pissed, has ADHD and is Dyslexic, and most important of all, he is part of a legacy that states that on his 16th birthday he will have to make decision that will make or break the future of the Olympian world...now that seems predictable, doesn't it?
As I read through the series, I realized that my love for Greek Mythology had never faded and I would wait for the next book to see if Percy would kick Ares' butt (God of war), or if Medusa (a real ugly Gorgon) would ever get killed, or if Kronos would ever come back to life and destroy the Olympian rule. (Kronos was a Titan lord who was killed by his 3 sons- Zeus, Poseidon and Hades).
I finished reading the last book of the series last night and wept....wept because there will not be any more Percy Jackson series...Rickie has decided that 5 are enough and he doesn't need to write any more.
To all who love reading and have 3 hours to waste right now...go pick up the 1st book in the series and then decide if we should write to Rick Riordan and ask him to continue with the 6th in the series.
To all who love reading and do not have 3 hours to waste...continue reading whatever/whoever you are reading and pls share the book with me...I am still despondent about Rick's decision.
Here's to Percy who made me believe in dreams!!!
